Jiu-jitsu for women in Round Rock, Austin and Pflugerville
Women-only jiu-jitsu classes at Renzo Gracie Lone Star Team, what jiu-jitsu teaches for self-defense, what training in a mixed class is like, what to wear, and how to try a free class.
Jiu-jitsu is one of the best things a woman can learn. It's built on leverage and technique, so a smaller person can control a bigger one. It's also a great workout and, at Lone Star, a big and growing community of women, with women-only classes at every gym.
Why women train jiu-jitsu
- Self-defense that's practised for real. You don't just learn moves in the air: you practise them against a resisting partner, which is what makes them work under stress.
- Confidence. Knowing you can stay calm and get out from under someone changes how you carry yourself.
- Fitness. Strength, cardio and flexibility, without it feeling like a gym routine.
- Community. Many women say the friendships are what keeps them coming back.
Women-only classes
Every gym has at least one class just for women:
- Round Rock: Women's Gi Fundamentals, Sundays at 1:00 PM, and Women's Judo, Saturdays at 8:00 AM.
- Austin: Women's Gi Class, Mondays at 6:00 PM.
- Pflugerville: Women's Open Mat, Saturdays at 10:00 AM.
Every other class is open to women too, and many of our members train in both. Members can train at all three gyms. The team also holds women's open mats that welcome women from other academies. The live schedules are on the gym pages: Round Rock, Austin and Pflugerville.
What a women's class is like
The same jiu-jitsu as any other class: a warm-up, a technique, drilling with a partner, and positional rounds or rolling at the end. The difference is who's on the mat: partners closer to your size, and a room where it's easy to ask questions. Many women start there and add mixed classes once they feel settled.
What jiu-jitsu teaches for self-defense
- Getting out from underneath. Escapes from being pinned or mounted are some of the first things you learn, and some of the most useful.
- Keeping distance and getting up safely. How to use your legs and frames to keep someone off you, and stand back up.
- Staying calm under pressure. Practising in a safe room is what lets your body stay calm when something is real.
Jiu-jitsu isn't a promise that you'll never be in danger, and nobody here will tell you it is. It is a practical, tested skill set, and it gets better every class.
Training in a mixed class
Mixed training is normal in jiu-jitsu, and it's how you learn to handle size and strength. You're always in control: you can turn down any partner, ask someone to go lighter, and tap (say "stop") at any time, and your partner lets go right away. If anyone makes you uncomfortable, tell a coach: we have zero tolerance for harassment.
What to wear
- No-gi: a sports bra, a fitted top or rash guard, and compression shorts or leggings.
- Gi classes: borrow one of our gis to start. If you buy one later, many brands make a women's cut.
- Hair braided or in a ponytail with no metal clips; no jewelry; nails trimmed.
Wash your gi or training clothes after every class, and shower after training.

Your first class
Your first class is free. Book any class that's open to everyone on your gym's page, or call the gym to start with a women's class. Arrive about 15 minutes early so we can say hello and show you around, and tell the coach it's your first class.
Questions
Do I have to train with men?
Not in the women-only classes. In other classes, you choose your partners and can turn anyone down.
I'm not strong. Will it work for me?
Yes. Jiu-jitsu is built on leverage and technique so that strength matters less.
Do I have to spar?
Not in your first class, and after that it's always your choice. Many women drill for a while before rolling.
Is the first class free?
Yes.
